Painting a Wood Fence

A wood fence can make for a beautiful addition to your home, but it should be cared for properly to ensure that the wood and the home it is placed on stay looking beautiful for years to come. Wood fence posts are usually 4×4 (3.5 inches x 4 inches). The post size will also vary based on the height of your fence. (Remember, the actual fence post height is usually the same as the post height plus an additional amount of post that must be sunk into the ground.)

Nailheads should be rounded and flat, not pointed, and the nail should be long enough to keep the nail from sticking out past the wall where it is being attached.

Once your fence posts have been nailed to the framing, trim any excess nails so they don’t poke through the wood. The nails should be long enough to stick out at least three times the length of each post. Use a saw to make them flush with the wall. If the posts are more than four inches in length, you will need to use plywood to support them.

When installing the top rail on the wall, you will want to attach two wood fence posts to a stud above. These are the top rails. You can also attach a second rail on a stud below if you want. They are easy to install and take up little room.

Next, attach the top rail to the top rail of each post. This is easier if you use the same method as the top rail. However, if you plan on using plywood, be sure to nail the studs on the bottom side as well. If you are nailing studs on the bottom rail, remember to use a nail head designed for that purpose.

The last and final step in keeping your fence looking its best is to seal it. The sealant will keep your wood fence looking good for years to come.

It is also a good idea to pick out different colors for your fence to make it stand out. It is easy to find paint that is both durable and attractive. However, to create a great looking fence you will need to choose paint colors that are complementary to the wood color you chose.

For example, you might have a redwood fence with white trim. In this case, you would probably want to match the fence’s paint to the color of the trim. If you want to change the fence’s color, use another color of paint that is similar in tone to the original.
